About the book >.>.> The 1980s have seen a succession of anniversaries relating to the City of Birmingham and its railways. The 150th anni- versaries of the formation of Birmingham’s first railways and Britain’s first trunk railways were in 1983 and 1985 was the rooth anniversary of the opening of the Midland side of New Street station. The 150th anniversary of the opening of Birm- ingham’s first railway the Grand Junction occurred in 1987. The year 1838 was an important one for Birmingham; it was connected to London by rail and the town received its Charter conferring upon it the status of a Municipal Borough. Another important anniversary year was reached in 1989. This was the Tooth anniversary of Birmingham being afforded city status. There are two interesting anniversaries to come: 1992 will mark the 225th year since the Act authorising the first section of the Birmingham anal as well as the 25th anni- versary of the opening of the modernised (and present) New Street station. It is therefore a fitting time to take a detailed look at Birmingham’s two historically most important railway stations Curzon Street and New Street. Curzon Street was Birmingham’s first permanent railway station and the first major station where interchange of traffic took place between two railway companies. In fact it remained Britain’s most important interchange station throughout most of its short life as a passenger station. The magnificent frontage built by the London & Birmingham Railway for its station comp lemented the Doric Arch or ‘Gateway to the North at Euston While Euston’s arch has long gone Hardwick’s Birm- ingham building remains as an important reminder of those pioneering days.
