About the book >.>.> The land and people of St. Helena Island are the same which lend charm to the work of Julia Peterkin and of DuBose Heyward; and they have that social significance which leads the student of human culture into all possible by-ways of scientific inquiry. The plot of this volume is the life and development of the St. Helena community rather than the life of individuals. It is life at a stage somewhat more advanced than that of Black April and Porgy because the people of St. Helena have had more ad- vantages; and its description is more unified than the frag mentary studies of folk culture of the older type. It would be impossible to describe the Island adequately without including the picturesque elements but the chief objective of this work has not been the picturesque in the sense that it may properly concern the litt?rateur. Com- plete and logical description of those customs and condi- tions which have made the community what it is today has been the primary aim with picturesqueness a secondary consideration. A more rounded and detailed picturization of the life of the whole people has been substituted for the characterization and plot of semi-fiction.
