About the book >.>.> The site once belonged to William Brewer adviser to four Norman monarchs and later to Baldwin Wake the King’s adversary. It also produced the Heathcotes-powerful prosperous and part of American history. Fairfax brought an army here and the Royalists drove it out; two years later Charles I retreated through the town. Lords plotted priests rebelled burgesses managed and the ordinary people worked with lead coal iron clay cloth and leather as the town grew from a small market centre to a major industrial borough. Down the centuries Chesterfield people kept to themselves resenting outsiders and handling affairs their own way. Yet outsiders did come-Lord Rosebery spoke here famously; de Camin tried to but was run out of town. Incomer Stephenson started a railway and a second industrial revolution while draper Robinson started something fairly big in 1835. By the turn of the century the borough had doubled and doubled again and now it is even larger after the 1974 acquisition of another 30000 souls. (SP)
