As Lieutenant John Wong of the 238th Engineer Combat Battalion puts it “It was like having a bag full of wildcats trapped and trying to prevent them from escaping from the bag.” In a situation where only brief periods of illumination resulted from fires explosions or flares shot skyward each of the participants in this melee reacted in their own way. As you will see only a relative handful grasped immediate- ly what was happening in their sector and boldly took con- trol of the situation. You will meet great unsung soldiers such as Michael Gainey Hulon Whittington “Chubby” Williams and Tom Doyle men who took a heavy toll of the Germans as they rampaged through the line the night of 29-30 July 1944. Although the focus of this entire book is only one week of World War II basically 24-30 July 1944 all events described in it lead to the climactic events of that single night of death. Herein is a valuable lesson in the vagaries of modern war and a study of human reactions in terrifying and confusing circumstances. (LL)
