About the book >.>.> In the 1805 edition of The Prelude Wordsworth spoke of how while out walking in Nature he had at times been fortunate enough to come upon the sort of landscape where he encountered “lines circles mounts a mystery of shapes” – the whole redolent of the cosmically oriented world of the Druids of old. Brian Rice (born 1936) is no Druid and his taste in poetry runs more to Thomas Hardy and Ted Hughes than it does to William Wordsworth. Nevertheless this image of the great English Romantic being enthused by a chance encounter with “a mystery of shapes” furnishes an appropriate introduction to a consideration of the distinctly poetic work of a contemporary artist whose imagination has been as nourished by the artefacts and mark-making of pre- historic art and culture as it has been energised by some of the most radical artistic developments of his own time. Wordsworth’s poem had a subtitle: The Growth Of A Poet’s Mind. The present exhibition and publication afford a timely opportunity to re-assess the overall achievements of a substantial painter and printmaker whose early work received considerable recognition both nationally and internationally but the excellence of whose more recent creativity awaits comparable acknowledge-ment and evaluation.
