About the book >.>.> Apart from the small meres occupying hollows in the boulder clay plain larger lakes form an important element in glacial scenery. Those which are due to the actual scooping out of hollows have already been mentioned: there are also those where the water is dammed up by a terminal moraine especially where the moraine stretches across a valley. When the ice-sheets advanced across England they played havoc with the pre-existing drainage. In very many cases rivers found their way barred by an ice wall with the result that the waters were ponded back and great lakes were formed. The North Sea Ice for example blocked the outlet of the Humber and a great lake formed behind-a lake to which the appropriate name of Lake Humber has been given- stretching as far south as the present site of Nottingham and as far north as the present site of York. When the waters reached the level of surrounding hills they often established overflow channels which in some cases became permanent water courses but in others were later abandoned and now form “wind-gaps.” (SP)
