About the book >.>.> Suitable nomenclature of some bayonets in this work can sometimes present a problem as the official terminology of bayonets did not use pattern dates until 1887 even though bayonets from 1840 on- wards were semi-officially awarded pattern dates (e.g. RSAF returns and departmental documentation) Bayonets prior to 1840 have been referred to by pattern dates (usually the introduction date) in most recent bayonet studies; a system not applied originally. Also some bayonets have been awarded different pattern dates in government correspondence (e.g. the Naval cutlass model has been referred to as both the Patt. 1858 and Patt. 1859 even though it is exactly the same bayonet) which further confuses the situation.
