About the book >.>.> The purpose of this establishment was to test and assess the suitability of all forms of mechanized transport including motorcycles offered to or acquired by the military authorities for potential service use. Each class of equipment had a standardized evaluation period applied to it. In the case of the motorcycle the establishment considered that all models should be subjected to a comprehensive 10000 mile test period consisting of both on- and off-road mileages the initial 500 miles of the test mileage being a running-in period. During the course of the test period an interim inspection of the motorcycle was carried out usually following the completion of at least 5000 miles in order to note the degree of wear and endurance of individual components. A variety of performance checks were also carried out but which generally employed ? mile standing-start times and fuel consumption figures over 100 mile distances. The machine’s off-road ability was also reviewed including its ability to travel across rough ploughed fields wet clay bogs sandy ditches and loose stone surfaces. Its ability to successfully stop and start on a gradient was also assessed. Following completion of the 10000 mile test period the motorcycle was completely stripped down to measure all components for wear and damage. All the relevant details were added to the interim 5000 mile report together with any notable points of concern that had arisen during the entire test period principally mechanical and electrical faults. The final stage of the test period involved the collation of all the information that had been gathered resulting in a detailed report on the motorcycle concerned. (LL)
