About the book >.>.> The question of how artists might be using this material at the turn of the Millennium when almost everything can be appropriated and manipulated in the name of art revealed activity more progressive tha might have been imagined. Sculptors were using bronze with great innovation some for the first time. Monumentality has been treated ironically by some artists who in debunking pomposity have created forms that are humorous or which have their own curious beauty. Within thirty sculptures the range of imagery subject-matter scale colour form and surface is enormous. Some works are cast in editions some are unique others have been fabricated and in several pieces bronze is set against other components of stone or steel. Holland Park has many different aspects from formal gardens to naturalised woodland and open lawns with both social and quiet places. From some points in the park the urban sprawl of London impinges on the view from others it is possible to imagine being in country woodland. The sculptures spread throughout these areas are loosely grouped so that certain cross-references may be found. Individuality of the artists however was fundamental in the selection which does not claim to be definitive. Some of Britain’s fine art foundries are exceptional m the help they give to artists and in their encouragement. The exhibition has benefited from these particular relationships as the alchemy that exists between artist and founder is as important as that which surrounds this most ancient and ‘wonderful material.
