About the book >.>.> The vast majority of modellers resort to the enjoyable pastime of kit construction to complete their collections or furnish layouts with ‘signature’ models that will set the era location and character of a layout. There was a veritable drought of really good modern wagons for some considerable time as the mainstream manufacturers did a great job of providing a range of superb new toolings for popular heavy freight engines but little for them to pull. This situation has changed as more new wagon models are becoming available in plastic and my previous book (Modern Wagons in 4mm Scale which is the third book in the British Railway Modelling series) describes the techniques that I regularly use to dress up off-the-shelf models to prepare them for traffic. I now turn my attention to those modelling techniques which I use to construct wagons not previously available as ready-to-run plastic models. A huge number of vehicles remain out of reach unless a kit is constructed a conversion undertaken or styrene card ‘flat packs’ cut and shaped in a scratch building exercise. This takes considerably more time effort and sometimes resources than to dress up an off-the-shelf plastic model. However it’s an important and very satisfying way of collecting some unique models: unique to you because no two modellers will build and finish a kit in exactly the same way. (LL)
