About the book >.>.> Like most Welsh counties Ceredigion is a maritime county. Its entire western flank is shoreline and forms a substantial part of Cardigan Bay. At the northern and southern ends there are estuaries the Dyfi and Teifi respectively. The transition from land to water is some- times sudden; a journey along the county’s western boundary is often along a cliff top. Therefore natives and visitors alike have especially valued beaches such as Penbryn and Y Borth. Warmer waters provided by the Atlantic drift benefit these shores. The coast through invasion trade and leisure has shaped much of the county’s history. Ceredigion’s eastern side which adjoins Carmarthenshire Breconshire Radnorshire and Montgomeryshire has also contributed to its past and present. While the west warms and opens the east protects. Even though a short journey inland can lead to drops in temperature the eastern hills and mountains act as a windbreak against cold easterly breezes. Breconshire lambs have been moved to the county because its winters were more clement than those of its eastern neighbour. This upland area has also been credited with slowing English cultural influences. (LL)
