About the book >.>.> Six years ago the first edition of Casualty Care in Mountain Rescue was distributed at the UK Millennium Mountain Rescue Conference in Lancaster. The aim was for every mountain rescuer to have a copy to mark the new century. I think we realised this goal-2000 copies sold in the first weekend and the remaining 1200 copies selling out in about one year. Copies reached all parts of the UK fairly equitably (at least based on the annual number of incidents). Of course some books ventured much further to South Africa USA Canada Singapore and Kent! The feedback we received was encouraging: ten days after the launch Nikki Wallis had a question about page 197 and interest from non-mountain rescue circles was high. The Mountain Rescue Council who had paid for the printing of the book just about broke even and had established a group of people (and a text) that would serve as a nucleus for further development. Of course at the millennium we almost gave the book away. And quite rightly the English and the lack of an index and glossary were criticised. Doctors (and others) wanted more guidance and the wider outdoor establishment wanted copies. Well OK. it was the first attempt and we had made a commitment to keep the book up-to- date so a second edition could address these issues. Little did I realise that writing a second edition would be quite as difficult. As with the first edition this book has been commissioned by the MRC; it is not the syllabus for MRC Casualty Care exam. This arrangement allows freedom for: teams to pitch the level of first aid to their environment: the MRC to set its exam; and the contributors to write down what they think is important.
