About the book >.>.> This volume is the fourth in a series of catalogues highlighting the Ashmolean Museum’s esteemed collection of drawings. It focuses on works by British artists and foreign artists who worked in England all born before 1775?though Thomas Girtin born in that year is also included. The collection is presented in its entirety with the exception of numerous architectural drawings associated with James Gibbs and Nicholas Hawksmoor which are deemed worthy of a separate catalogue. The volume is organized into three sections each dedicated to a different century: the sixteenth seventeenth and eighteenth. The Ashmolean Museum is particularly renowned for its early drawings and this catalogue features works by notable artists such as Holbein Anthonis van den Wyngaerde and rare seventeenth-century draughtsmen. It also includes significant pieces by J. R. Cozens Dayes Rowlandson Sandby Wilson and other prominent eighteenth-century artists. Over five hundred and sixty drawings are reproduced in microfiche housed in a slip-case inside the back cover. Additionally a select number of drawings are illustrated within the volume itself providing a comprehensive overview of the Ashmolean’s rich and diverse collection. (MP)
