About the book >.>.> Ever since 1768 the Royal Family’s continuing association with the Royal Academy has taken many forms. Monarchs and their families have regularly visited the annual Summer Exhibition and many works have been purchased for the Royal Collection in the course of those visits. It is perhaps also worth noting that the present exhibition to which Her Majesty has graciously contributed more than eighty works from the Royal Collection is only the latest in a succession of more than 160 exhibitions to which works have been lent. Most spectacular perhaps was the loan of more than 500 pictures in 1946 to an exhibition simply entitled “The King’s Pictures” staged at Burlington House as a tonic to the nation following the Second World War. The accounts of the dispersal of the King’s possessions in 1649-51 and the inventories taken of the various palaces in his lifetime – long ago published have enabled scholars to create in their mind’s eye a form of ‘virtual” re-construction and to sense the thrill of what it must have felt like to see it all together. Any attempt at bringing even part of the collection back together in physical form has always seemed unattainable so I hope that as many people as possible will come to the Royal Academy in this most special commemorative year to witness such a glorious reunion. We are fortunate indeed to be able to do so. (MP)
