In this par- ticular portrayal three facets of his character define him- first as a man with defects as well as virtues. Born of a humble family he shapes it into something new endowing it with a higher social status of his own choosing. We will get to know those who throughout his life were both his friends and enemies. We will appreciate his difficult character and will gain per- spective from a portrait of his daily life including descriptions of the food he enjoyed how he dressed what he read and aspects of his household. We will recognize his struggle for survival his triumph over many physical ailments and his demands for the maintenance of his titles – with inherent income – in favor of his firstborn son. Once we’ve encountered Columbus in his natural environment we will then see him develop into the mariner. Columbus did not receive any higher educa- tion: he acquired nautical skills through experience.. As a youth he traveled the Mediterranean coasts and later sailed the seas of Africa and northern Europe. We learn not only about the voyages that granted him well-deserved fame but we will also experience his other sea journeyings. Not all of them were success- ful. He lost many of his ships endured hurricanes and suffered from the arrogance of his own sailors who in mutinies on various occasions sought his death. And for the duration of one year he was even shipwrecked on the island of Jamaica. We will glimpse a less well-known part of Columbus life during his appointment and rule as Viceroy. (MP)
