About the book >.>.> THE LATE Dr. Allen began his work on The Great Church Towers of England with the proud words: ‘Born and brought up in Somerset and having a natural love of architecture I early conceived it to be my duty to make a systematic study of the many fine towers of the county for the benefit of posterity.’ The present author has the same qualifications but must claim a more modest purpose. He wishes to present the churches of his native county as a whole in a manner which shall be reliable and yet attractive. This has not hitherto been done. The English county is the most historical and usually the most convenient of local units: none more so than Somerset where the boundaries are natural and have from very early times also been those of the diocese. But in most counties the churches can only be studied piecemeal or absorbed in the whole ecclesiastical architecture of England. It is not of course sug- gested that the local style ceased at the county borders or even that the medieval builders were conscious of them but merely that they provide to-day a casket as it were in which these jewels can most easily be com- pared and admired.
