About the book >.>.> During the interwar period the dominant opinion in many European countries was that armies needed two classes of tank. One of them would be for rapid pursuit operations while the other would crack through ene- my defences in close support of the infantry. The British and French were among the followers of this doctrine. The result was that the “fast or cruiser tanks were assigned to armoured divisions tasked with inde- pendent activities at the operational level while the other type known as “infantry” tanks would be grouped in tank brigades expected to cooperate closely with the infantry divisions. What was expected of these infantry tanks? They had to be protected sufficiently to survive the fire of the anti-tank assets used by contemporary armies. Their armament had to enable them to effectively support in- fantry advances. On the other hand they could be rela- tively slow. It was enough that they could keep up with the infantry. They had however to be able to efficient- ly cross terrain and overcome obstacles prepared by the enemy. (SP)
