About the book >.>.> Robert Adams Lieutenant Beaumont and James Kerr each took out U.S. patents to cover their designs to the Adams revolver. Adams was granted U.S. Patent No. 9694 May 3 1853 for his self-cocking action: Lieutenant Beaumont U.S. Patent No. 15032 June 3. 1856 for his mechanism for both double and single action; and for his rammer James Kerr was issued U.S. Patent No. 17044 dated April 14 1857. In June 1856 an Englishman by the name of Major R.S. Ripley acting on behalf of the Adams interest in London contacted the U.S. Ordnance Department from his hotel room at the New York Hotel in New York City offering to sell one hundred English Adams revolvers Colonel Craig accepted Major Ripley’s offer for the one hundred revolvers on June 17 1856 with the instruction that they be delivered to Captain Whiteley at the New York Arsenal on Governor Island Four days later Craig again wrote Ripley stating that the one hundred Adams revolvers should be of the Colt Navy size (36 caliber) since this size was the caliber most in use by the U.S. Cavalry. It was not until September 1856 that the price was established at $18 for cach revolver with Ripley to pay the customs duties on the revolvers Since the order called for the revolvers to be delivered in 30 caliber which was not one of the basic calibers then being manufactured in Eng land it took several months to complete the order. It was not until March 7. 1857 that the one hundred English Adams revolvers. (LL)
