About the book >.>.> The period covered by this book spans from the dawn of the post-war era when a still healthy British motorcycle industry could quite literally sell everything it could produce through the heyday of the 1950s by which time the war- induced raw-material shortages ad all but passed to the cut-price era of the late 1960s and early 1970s when small-time manufacturers of British trials machines blossomed through the circumventing of a tax law which allowed them to market their products free of duty in kit form. It might surprise today’s reader but despite their numerical superiority those earliest over- the-counter two-stroke trials irons would not have been considered as being potential national trials winners by their buyers or manufacturers; rather they were just like the later Yamaha TY175 that is a mount for the non-expert clubman. Until the 1960s few such machines were even fitted with full-size 4 in. section rear tyres or larger than 19 in. front wheels. Trials themselves were very different from today’s events offering wide open main road sections albeit often comprising man-sized hills rocks or power-sapping glutinous mud but the dreaded word ‘nadgery’ had yet to be invented.
