About the book >.>.> Clifton College opened its doors in 1862 founded by a group of local professional men and gentry to provide Bristol with an elite school on the model of Arnold’s Rugby. Within a very short time this ambition was achieved and Clifton attained a distinctive position in the educational firmament. This volume published to mark the School’s 150th anniversary documents its beginnings and its developments to the start of the Second World War. The texts almost all of which are published for the first time include formal documents such as the Royal Charter by which the College was incorporated in 1877 and selections from the minutes of the governing Council. There are also many personal letters and confidential reports. The arrangement is thematic and includes sections on science music debating the Cadet Corps and sport: all areas in which Cliftonians have excelled. Many of the College’s most celebrated alumni are featured including Field Marshals Haig and Birdwood poet Sir Henry Newbolt actors Sir Michael Redgrave and Trevor Howard Nobel laureate Sir John Kendrew Olympic medallist Jerry Cornes and world-record batsman A.E.J. Collins. There is also frank treatment of occasional failures. The documents are extensively annotated by reference to the Clifton College Register where full biographical details of Clifton masters and boys mentioned in the present volume will be found. (MP)
