About the book >.>.> Mount is a tiny village in the parish of Warleggan in the county of Comwall. It is thought that the name of the parish is an abbreviation of the Celtic Worth-la-gan the higher place on the downs which is exactly where it is placed. The village is situated just on the edge of the southernmost parts of Bodmin Moor by which it is surrounded. Below to the east of the village the tumbling river Bedalder weaves its way through the scenic Warleggan valley under Panter’s Bridge and makes its way via the Fowey out to sea. Travel two miles further east and you come to St. Neot village and then onwards to Liskeard town. Travel west six miles and you will reach the old county town of Bodmin. The casual observer would declare Mount a fairly utilitarian place for it has few if any buildings of architectural merit and unlike many Cornish villages it cannot rely on a lucrative tourist attraction. Two hundred years ago there were fewer houses but more people living and working in the village. The population in 1821 was 296 today in 2003 a mere 160. Historically Mount’s residents earned their livings from mining farming or shopkeeping. Today people are still working in or from the village; some are farming some are builders and carpenters others hoteliers but none are miners. Most of these people were born and bred here; others chose to settle here as we did thirty years ago when we bought the smallholding known as Barley Splatt. (LL)
