About the book >.>.> Before proceeding beyond this point we feel we should make clear our purpose in compiling this collection of photographs. We have not in any way set out to write a ‘history’ of the town or to place our photographs in any chronological order. It is a human trait to reminisce and we feel that by providing these pictures we will allow the people of the area the opportunity to indulge themselves. We must also stress that much of our information is taken from personal anecdotes and whilst we have taken great care to double check wherever possible we do apologise for any inaccuracies that do occur. We have also made every effort to contact people included in our pictures. but obviously this also has not always been possible and we very much hope we have not included anything which will offer offence. We feel our area is second to none in terms of beauty tranquility and character; and yet history has to a certain extent either passed us by or touched us briefly in passing. Catherine of Aragon stayed at one of the parsonage houses in 1501 for one night on the way to her marriage in London. William of Orange also spent a Sunday in the town whilst travelling from Torquay to London. ‘Here at Crokehorn his Highness remained the Lord’s Day November 25th 1688’. Various regiments we are told passed through our town before moving on to meet their destiny at such places as Taunton Lansdown Lyme and Langport. Even in more modern times Crewkerne is portrayed as a place for passing through. On July 2nd 1982 for example the B.B.C. broadcast its ‘Any Questions’ programme from Maiden Beech School. In his (LL)
