About the book >.>.> I first came across the textile designs of Alec Walker when I was asked in 1985 to research and curate an exhibition for Newlyn Orion which would examine certain craft-based industries which had developed in the artistic environment of the Newlyn Art Colony during the last decade of the nineteenth century. Initially I was to investigate metalwork jewellery printmaking and ceramics but my interest was aroused by a short piece on Alec Walker in Caroline Fox’s catalogue for the exhibition Painting in Newlyn 1900-30 and on seeing some examples of the textiles which I thought stunningly original I was delighted when the opportunity unexpectedly arose to include a section on Crys?de in the exhibition in June 1986. On that occasion with the limited time available it was not possible to attempt a detailed study of the designs but when in 1991 the Royal Cornwall Museum acquired Polly Walker’s substantial collection of textiles printing-blocks documents etc. with the generous support of the Cornwall Heritage Trust I was able to resume my research with the aim of establishing an archive of the designs. I was encouraged in this project by the reactions of everyone to whom I showed the textiles and it became clear that what was needed was a source book which would illustrate some of the most important designs in colour together with supporting text which would attempt to set them in a cultural and artistic context. To this end it has been invaluable to have unrestricted access to many of Alec Walker’s paintings drawings and designs on paper through the generosity of his family during the preparation of this book and the exhibition it supports.
