About the book >.>.> Nicholas Culpeper (1616-1654) was a very famous astrologer-physician of the early 17th Century. After a short apprenticeship to an apothecary in St. Helen’s Bishopsgate he set up his own practice in Red Lion Street Spitalfields in 1640. During his life he devoted much time to the study of astrology and medicine and published numerous tracts which although unorthodox and condemned by the contemporary medical standards nevertheless enjoyed large sales. He left as his legacy to future generations a vast collection of herbal remedies which by virtue of the un- dating nature of their healing properties are as invaluable today as they were during the physician’s lifetime over 300 years ago. Culpeper was married and the father of seven children. During the Civil War he fought on the Parliamentary side and was wounded in the chest. Although throughout his life he lived in very straitened circumstances he was always happy and willing to give free advice to the many poor people who came to him for help. (SP)
