About the book >.>.> Korean artist Meekyoung Shin creates objects that look like ceramics. Her versions are disarmingly precise but soap rather than clay is her material of choice. Swapping materials allows Shin to poke fun at our ability to discera authenticity and value from the knock-off or replica. Even the crates printed with ‘fragile’ used as plinths for her objects tell a story of half-truths. The objects on display are indeed fragile but in a soapy way rather than ready to shatter. When installed outside Shin’s work literally slips away from us. Her installation in Cavendish Square London Written in Soap: A Plinth Project (2012- ongoing) recreates the equestrian statue of the disgraced Duke of Cumberland whose original statue was removed in 1868 nearly 100 years after installation when public opinion of his military career earned him the nickname “the Butcher’. In 2013 the work travelled to exhibitions in Korea and Taiwan further complicating history and context. Shin’s statement about her exhibition. (MP)
