About the book >.>.> However rather than use Cartesian or Lockean doctrines as filters to interpret modern philos-ophy continental theorists often invite us to read modern texts with a sen-sitivity to how such pronouncements ground ways of thinking that are only retrospectively characterized as modern. Instead of providing anachronis-tic readings of texts continental theorists thus attempt to recover aspects of modern philosophy that have been systematically overlooked. Much of the work by continental theorists on sixteenth- through eighteenth-century thinkers has been ignored by commentators inter-ested more in how their twentieth-century strategies engage current philo-sophic questions. For example Jacques Derrida’s deconstructive critique attracts much more attention than his interpretations of Condillac or Rousseau. Gilles Deleuze is much more widely known for his seminal works in poststructuralist thought than for his book-length analyses of Spinoza Leibniz Hume and Kant. Mich?le Le Doeuff’s and Luce Iri-garay’s treatments of Descartes Julia Kristeva’s review of the Encyclope-dists and Louis Althusser’s discussions of Spinoza and Hume all are gen-erally subordinated by commentators to their more theoretical less historical writings. This book is an attempt to correct that imbalance. (LL)
