About the book >.>.> Fortunately in an historical sense the structure of the Midland Railway in Birmingham made it comparatively straightforward to divide. The Midland Railway was formed on 10th May 1844 by the amalgamation of the Midland Counties Railway North Midland Railway and the Birmingham & Derby Junction Railway. In 1844 the Birmingham & Gloucester was an inde- pendent railway company with its first Birmingham terminus at Camp Hill but in 1845 entered into a working agreement with the Bristol & Gloucester Railway whereby the two railways were worked as one and in 1846 the Bristol & Gloucester amalgamated with the Midland. We therefore decided that Part 2 would concentrate on the former Birmingham & Derby Junc- tion Railway and later lines connecting to it and Part 3 would cover the former Birmingham & Gloucester Railway and later lines connecting to it. In order to show the developments that took place we have used a number of maps and whilst the Midland Railway distance diagrams largely fulfil our needs we have included additional sketches of specific stations. etc. and I am very grateful to John Copsey for his help.
