About the book >.>.> The official birthday of Hitler’s air force was 9 March 1935 although the existence of a Reichsluftwaffe (as it was then called) had been publically acknowledged the previous month. Germany had been forbidden an air force under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 but the re-creation of one had begun virtually before the ink on that treaty had dried. The former German Imperial Air Service had been part of the army and it was the army that was instrumental in reconstituting it-a process greatly speeded up with the accession to power of the Nazis in January 1933. Hitler wanted an air force quickly. The man he entrusted with its formation was Hermann Wilhelm G?ring ex-World War I fighter “ace” and the erstwhile final commander of the world renowned Richthofen Jagdgeschwader. On 2 February 1933 G?ring was named Reichskommissar f?r die Luftfahrt (National Commissioner for Aviation) a title changed the following month to Reichsminister der Luftfahrt with the es- tablishment of a Reichsluftfahrtministerium (National Ministry of Aviation) or RLM.
