About the book >.>.> It naturally lives in the calm warm waters of the Amazon and its tributaries. Many have described these fish as “pancake-looking” and with the discus’ flattened rounded body it is easy to see why. The popularity of the discus as a pet however has led specialist breeders to develop many new colours body and finnage forms to fulfil the desires of the hobby aquarium. In fact in the aquarium the original species’ characteristics are a rare sight these days. Because of their unique ‘man made’ shapes temperament and wide variety of beautiful colours discus are considered to be the most desirable aquarium fish by many aquarists. Some have called the discus the “king of the aquarium”. Discus will often grow to be over seven inches in diameter in an aquarium. Nobody really seems to know how long these fish live for. The general consensus is that it’s about eight years I have had a solid blue discus that lived longer that 17 and kept going strong A breeder local to me reported he had kept a pair for 24 years. These fantastic fish naturally come from the mighty river systems of South America. Only recently I had a customer come into my shop here in Plymouth who really thought that discus originated in Asia. I can understand why he thought that-many discus come from the Far East. To the newcomer it would be easy to think that. But no! Discus are only naturally found in the tributaries of the Amazon. (LL)
