About the book >.>.> The Isles of Scilly comprise five inhabited islands some 48 islets and hundreds of rocks spread out over some 63 square miles 28 miles west of Land’s End. The group is the peak of a submerged seamount with individual islands at one time joined together now a series of granite outcrops separated by shallow sea. The islands are very low lying – the highest part of the main island St Mary’s is only 57m above sea level – and when shrouded in fog or rain the entire group of islands merges into a background of heaving grey sea. This feature has been the most singular cause of shipwrecks here. Deep water surrounds the Scillies and there are often depths of 73m within less than a quarter mile offshore so that in places rock faces plunge vertically from the surface to 30m or more. Located at the junction of the Bristol and English Channels. there is a considerable tidal flow but it seldom exceeds 3 to 4 knots with reasonable periods of slack water. Between the individual islands the sea bed is predominantly sand with average depths of 3 to 9m. With no rivers and few fresh water streams and swept by tides direct from the Atlantic water clarity can be almost tropical: divers frequently comment on underwater visibility which can exceed 35m.
