About the book >.>.> For virtually all of the twentieth century another important part of the Isle of Wight’s identity was the characteristic ‘DL’ number plates carried by local motor vehicles. Many of these are still to be seen in use on the Island and mainland with some displayed as personalised or cherished plates on newer vehicles. They are becoming less and less common however following their replacement by ‘HW’ numbers for new vehicles from September 2001 onwards. As a child in the 1950s my late parents Don and Eileen Chessell introduced a travel game for my brother and myself to look out for DL-registered vehicles which came from the Isle of Wight. Fifty years on I still find myself noticing DL number plates whether they are on the road from Cowes to Newport or travelling around London on the M25! Over the past few years I have collected and taken many photographs of older DL-registered vehicles. Detailed official records of the 14000 or so vehicles registered in Newport up to 1939 have been very hard to obtain especially for the period up to 1926. Despite the research difficulties however I hope that this coffee table book will provide an informative and entertaining journey into this aspect of the Isle of Wight’s local history.
