About the book >.>.> One of the most significant American artists of the post-war period Donald Judd changed the course of modern sculpture. This exhibition is the first full retrospective of his sculpture since 1988 and the first to cover Judd’s entire career from the time that he first developed his own language until his death in 1994. Emerging in the 1960s in New York Judd became known as a major exponent of ‘Minimalism’ – a label that he strongly rejected describing his work as ‘the simple expression of complex thought’. Concentrating on a limited number of forms strikingly rendered in contrasting materials and colours Judd created an astonishing range of moods and experiences. The austerity of Judd’s forms contrasts with the rich sensuousness of the objects that he create Judd’s engagement with philosophy architecture design and politics both informed his own work and influenced the practice of succeeding generations of artists and designers. It is possible to identify Judd’s influence on the pared-down forms and the sensuous use of industrial materials that are so frequently a feature of contemporary architecture and design. It seem particularly fitting to show Judd’s work in the former industrial spaces of Tate Modern while recognising that his own installation of his works in these spaces would probably have taken a very different form. The exhibition will also be shown at K20 Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen D?sseldorf and at the Kunstmuseum Basel. (MP)
