About the book >.>.> Breathing heavily but rhythmically and sustained by a drip E.L.T. Mesens Belgian poet collagist Surrealist art-dealer and alcoholic has less than forty-eight hours to live. Seated about five feet from the side of the death-bed in a private room at a Brussels nursing-home and behind one of those tables which can be adjusted in height for bedridden patients able to feed themselves is a fat man. He is eating with pleasurable concentration a large helping of sausage and mash wheeled in a few minutes earlier and concealed under a large metal dome which I had imagined until it was removed with a flourish to conceal a piece of surgical equipment to prolong the life of the dying poet. The fat man Mesens’s cousin had offered me a share of the sausages but I had declined not so much from squeamishness (although the proximity of my moribund friend in this white room smelling of flowers was hardly conducive to appetite) but because I had already offered lunch in a nearby restaurant to a young German woman caed Ruth who had been looking after ELT during his last few months.
