About the book >.>.> Con- cerning the trend that may be observed in the works of certain artists towards separating the customary symbols or attributes from a religious scene and giving them an inde- pendent existence as a symbolic still-life picture. This tendency seems to have had far- reaching effects on the rise of both Dutch and Flemish still-life painting. My continued research has enabled me in a general way to place somewhat greater stress on the importance of symbolism not only during the transitional period immediately after the inception of still-life painting proper but also during the seventeenth century itself. The classification in this work of Dutch seventeenth century still-life pictures has been made from iconographical as well as from chronological standpoints. Thus the earlier painters of flowers and fruit the painters of the early breakfast-piece of the later breakfast-piece of the Vanitas-still-life and also of the game-piece are here treated in dis- tinct groups to each of which has been allotted a separate chapter. Three more chapters are devoted respectively to Jan Davidsz. de Heem to Abraham van Beyeren and to Willem Kalf all great masters of outstanding significance from 1640-50 onwards. Both De Heem and Van Beyeren cultivated each of them in a most individual way several distinct iconographic types; the former even blended into a marked personal style certain features of Dutch and Flemish
