We have aimed to provide enough explanatory material to help students achieve a basic understanding of the texts. Those interested in deeper exploration can refer to the Bibliographical Note. Readers should be aware that the interpretations presented here are not free from controversy. Our selection of texts is broad. We have included some texts of uncertain authenticity that still reflect pre-Platonic political thought. Some texts were chosen not for their direct contribution to political theory but for the context they provide to other relevant texts. Issues of authenticity are noted where applicable. The texts are organized by genre with the sophists appearing last. Texts representing Socrates’ thought are excluded as they will be covered in a separate volume of this series. A chronology of authors and events can be found on pages xxiii?xxv. Unless specified otherwise all dates are BCE. The translations prioritize clarity and accuracy generally adhering to the structure of the original Greek. Translations of Greek verse are roughly line-for-line with Greek line numbers provided for easy reference. Key terms like dike (?justice?) are translated consistently throughout. Technical Greek words without direct English equivalents such as arete and hubris which have gained specific connotations in modern discourse are handled with particular care. (SP)
