About the book >.>.> Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708-70) inaugurated the ‘Golden Age of Botanical Art’. Interest in flower painting was at its height in the eighteenth century and Ehret became one of the most sought-after illustrators of the botanical books that were compiled or collected by the keen botanists of the time both amateur and professional. Ehret’s art combined botanical exactitude with great beauty of design and his work has never been surpassed. This book includes examples of all aspects of his work from his delightful early water- colours to his later more formal engravings and the splendid finished drawings on vellum. It also gives a general survey of the present location of his known drawings. His life story provides a fascinating sidelight on the means by which a man of exceptional talent could rise to inter- national fame in the eighteenth century born the son of a gardener in Heidelberg his talent as a draughtsman was soon recognized by the German botanists with whom he came in contact. His first patron. Dr Trew of Nuremberg a distinguished scientist of the time commissioned him to draw exotic plants and species newly introduced from other continents and these drawings gained him a considerable reputation.
