About the book >.>.> From the late 1930s up to the 1950s Elmfield was an almost self-contained village. Before World War II Elmfield was not part of Ryde as it is today but was in the St. Helen’s Urban District and the Council Chambers were in the building in Somerset Road which now houses the 2nd Ryde Sea Scouts and where the Air Raid Siren for the area was sited. There were two Public Houses two Bakers two Butchers three Grocers seven independent Milkmen one Chemist a Post Office and many other shops and businesses. That was the village of David’s youth. At the moment only one photograph showing some of the many elm trees that gave the name of Elmfield to the area can be traced taken in the early 1950s. A photograph of the same area taken in 2006 has been obtained by taking a digital camera out into Marlborough Road and walking north while facing south. This has produced a very similar view although the first picture was taken in snowy conditions and there are no vehicles in view. The later photograph shows several vehicles and the moving ones had to be avoided as the picture had to be taken from near the middle of the road. The two pictures overleaf show almost identical views looking south along the Mariborough Road. As a point of reference the building on the corner of Hope Road and Marlborough Road which is now flats but used to be the Lake Superior public house has been arrowed. (LL)
