About the book >.>.> The earliest chairs of which records are available are of comparatively little interest to the modern craftsman. As the chair was regarded as the seat of honour contrasted with the benches it was often elaborate and on lines that would not appeal at all to the person of taste in the present day. From a practical point of view the evolution of the modern chair (or perhaps it would be more correct to say the chair in demand to-day) can be classed in two divisions. One includes the artistic and the other the merely useful. As a rough and ready classification these headings serve to describe the chairs produced now. In the former class the eighteenth century is the dominating note. There is nothing to challenge its supremacy. There are many expres- sions varied widely by the modern designer but the keynote is discernible always. Dutch designs modified later in the Queen Anne style are still in demand. The popular ball and claw identified with many of Chippendale’s chairs is found in Dutch patterns earlier in the century. (MP)
