About the book >.>.> It was in the 1830s and 1840s that the foundations were laid for the second flowering of English ecclesiastical embroidery. In 1829 the Catholic Emancipation Act legalized the practice of Roman Catholicism. Four years later in 1833 the clergyman John Keble preached the Assize Sermon in Oxford which heralded the so-called ‘Oxford Movement in the Anglican church Concerned mainly with restoring High Church ideals that is with theological and liturgical issues in 1839 it spawned the Oxford Society for Promoting the Study of Gothic Architecture (later the Oxford Architectural Society) and indirectly its rival the Cambridge Camden Society (publishers of The Ecclesiologist magazine from 1841 to 1868 and after 1846 called the Ecclesiological Society).
