About the book >.>.> During the growing commercialism and trade enterprise of the middle of the nineteenth century the high standard of design in decorative art may have shown signs of decadence but it is to the credit of this country that it withstood any inclination to participate in the extravagances of style so prevalent on the Continent. Differences of opinion may exist regarding standards of taste in design and decoration national and individual but it is generally admitted that the work of the English craftsmen and designers from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century is characterized in all our decorative arts by a sane sense of proportion and lack of crudity. My best thanks are due to the various owners and firms who have generously permitted me to illustrate this book by the reproduction of specimens from their collections and due acknowledgment has been made at the foot of each plate. It is to be noted that the copyright of many of the chintz designs is held by the firms mentioned some of whom are still reproducing these old patterns on cloth. I specially wish to express my indebtedness to Messrs. Stead McAlpin & Co. Messrs. G. P. and J. Baker and the Calico Printers’ Association for their valued assistance accorded me in compiling this book. (MP)
