About the book >.>.> Erna always had a smirk on her face as if she wanted to signal or say something though she never did. She usually had that face. And the voice was high-pitched faintly-obstinate. Overly restrained. No gestures. Glasses on her nose. The hairdo of a simple Polish girl straight out of the poems of Mickiewicz. Her hands neatly on her lap holding her purse.”1 This is how Miron Bialoszewski recalled Erna Rosenstein in his Tajny dziennik [Secret Diary]. Our recollections however are very different – we remember her as a person who was happy to talk and bold in her accounts of her life and in particular her art. The intention of this book is to offer an interpre- tation of her oeuvre a careful reading of it. The publication is a result of and expansion on the exhibition Erna Rosenstein. I Can Repeat Only Unconsciously (pp. 10-13) which we organised at the Foksal Gallery Foundation and the Avant- garde Institute (the former studio of Henryk Stazewski and Edward Krasinski) in Warsaw in the spring of 2011.2 Rosenstein was born in 1913 in Lviv and spent her youth in Krakow and Vienna. In the mid-1930s she became involved with the avant-garde Krakow Group circle. The war and the Holocaust put her life on hold after which she had to start everything anew. (MP)
