About the book >.>.> As a whole the works painted in the Escorial are regarded as representatives of Mannerism. They frequently drew from borrowed material based on classical models. One of the foremost masters of the Escorial was Luis de Carvajal (about 1556-1607) The composition of his painting “Circumscision of Christ” is based on an engraving. The unnaturalness of the move- ments of the persons in the painting the impres- sion of imitated poses and gestures and the placing of candles are typical of Mannerism. In addition the figures are placed symmetrically closely resembling the ideals of High Renais- sance. The action takes place in a reduced inte- rior representative of classical architecture. The artist is fascinated by contrasts of light; he juxta- poses streams of light flowing from the back- ground and foreground. “Tenebroso” the ma nipulation of sharp contrasts of light and shade soon to become highly characteristic of Spanish painting began to emerge in the Escorial “Andrew the Apostle” a painting by Miguel Barroson (about 1538-1590).
