About the book >.>.> The remarkable visionary architectural projects of Etienne-Louis Boull?e made their chief impact during the time of the French Revolution; but with the rise of totalitarian regimes in the twentieth century there came a renewed concern with the symbolic implications of architectural design. Buildings by Shchusev Tatlin and Speer show some striking similarities with Boull?e’s pro- jects though the Russian and German originators may not have been familiar with them. There are close parallels between Boull?e and Frank Lloyd Wright in their preoccupation with merging nature with architecture. In spite of the affinities between modern architecture and Boull?e’s progressive views of architectural design his ex- pectations were far from being fulfilled. Jean-Marie P?rouse de Montclos uses abundant illustrations to document Boull?e’s development as an architect: from his adoption of the concepts of French classicism to express his reaction against the rococo through his need to return to antiquity to achieve true architectural reform and his elabora- tion of a theoretical definition of art in which he reduces the aesthetic of all fine arts to the single principle of the imita- tion of nature.
