About the book >.>.> Few people who visit Exeter today can leave without commenting on what an attractive and charming City it is. Certainly it has the reputation of being one of the finest City’s in England. Because of its situation on a hill above the river Exe at the most suitable crossing place for traffic it has a constant influx of visitors. It is the river to which Exeter owes its existence and it has been a major factor relating to the growth of the City. In times gone by crossing the river was a dangerous business and long before any bridges were constructed many lost their lives trying to do so. The site at Exeter gave the securest crossing point. The cliffs at the river’s edge had the advantage of providing a natural defence by giving clear views of the surrounding countryside. These basic points for survival came into being many centuries ago and although responsible for shaping the City bears little importance today. Visitors standing in the centre of Exeter are often surprised to see green fields surrounding the City. This rural aspect is perhaps one of the most charming that Exeter has to offer. Sadly much of that ‘untouched’ countryside is disappearing as the population increases. The climate of the City is most pleasing being mild for much of the year and this produces a wealth of botanical growth. This has been capitalised upon and today Exeter is recognised as ‘The Floral Capital Of Europe’. It boasts some of the oldest public gardens in the country. Centrally situated in one of Englands most beautiful counties Exeter is an ideal base for travelling around Devon Cornwall and Dorset. The attractions of Devon are many and thousands of visitors come to absorb its natural beauty. The lure of Dartmoor and Exmoor are strong being areas of out- standing natural landscape.
