About the book >.>.> THIS book arose from a paper entitled “What is Alive and What is Dead in Existentialism?” It was first published in the issue L’Existentialisme devant l’Opinion Philosophique of the Revue Internationale de Philosophie July 1949 and reappeared in an enlarged German edition in the Zeit- schrift f?r Philosophische Forschung (1950-51) and in Spanish in Sur Buenos Aires 1952. In its present form it is based on lectures delivered in the University of Oxford. It is hoped that this book may be helpful to all those who dissatisfied with a merely linguistic approach to philosophical problems are looking for an alternative. If there is a message in these essays it is that there are alternative modes of philosophizing and that it does not make sense to exclude them by dogmatically adhering to a narrow and arbitrary definition of philosophy. All those who have still eyes to see for themselves will recog- nize that even if one rejects the proposed solutions the problems here discussed are real and most urgent. Though they are not eternal they are recurrent because their source is the condition of man. They cannot be elimin- ated as pseudo-problems for they arise from life and their verification consists in being lived. A philosopher who has something to say must have lived his problems if they are existential and he must have first-hand knowledge of them if they originate in scientific research. To-day we are faced with the central problem of finding a new mode of philosophical expression adequate to the present con- dition of man and therefore a new starting-point. If this book should prove to clear the ground for this great purpose it has not been written in vain. My thanks are due to the editors of the above-named journals to those of The Hibbert Journal and of Philosophy. (LL)
