About the book >.>.> Whilst not a retrospective it surveys Yinka Shonibare’s major forms of expression-sculpture painting drawing and film the latter created through two further media-music and performance. The exhibition premi?res two important new outdoor works the Wind Sculptures which are the latest manifestation of Shonibare’s expanding interest in making art for public places and they together with the rest of the exhibition have succeeded in captivating Yorkshire Sculpture Park’s diverse audience as well as attracting critical acclaim. In common with all of his projects the exhibition title was provided by Shonibare and it points to his love for the making the fabrication of physical things in this respect he is a traditional figurative sculptor. It also highlights the use of fabric which has so dominated his work. By isolating the suffix ‘ATION Shonbare makes an action and quality of the prefix FABRIC so the title doesn’t simply allude to making but to the particular qualities wrought by cloth. And the use of uppercase lettering announces and fixes the whole as a physical entity. So in one word we begin to see the complex allegorical nature of this artist’s work. (MP)
