About the book >.>.> In this book however I explore the ways these two fields can be and are linked using the territory of clothing and age to explore central questions in modern culture. Is the nature of later years changing under the impact of social and demographic change and how has this affected how old age is imagined experienced and un- derstood? Do older people feel differently about their lives now? What role might spheres of cultural production like fashion and dress play in such changes? How indeed do fashion and the fashion world treat old age? The grey market is recog- nized as increasingly significant economically. Are consumers seeing changes in the way the commercial world responds to this? Older people are often characterized as frustrated shoppers unable to find their desires reflected in the market. Is this so and why? There are deep ambivalences experienced here by both customers and retailers as the fashion world attempts to walk the tightrope of ageism producing goods that are aimed at this market but without being overtly labelled as such Indeed this is a cultural field that is permeated by the language of moving younger’. Why is this so and do such impulses reflect the aspirational nature of consumption rather than any real change in the cultural location of age? What part does age play in the dynamic of fashion transmission itself and has it replaced social class in the ordering of this?
