About the book >.>.> There is I suppose a small band of dedicated enthusiasts and traditionalists who will occasionally continue to fish the old classically-built flies just for the sheer fun of it. I can well imagine the satisfaction to be gained by catching a salmon on a fully-dressed Jock Scott. However the main aim of this book is to present the surprisingly large number and variety of featherwing flies which are quite as effective as any hairwings when used in the right circumstances and in the correct manner. It is generally held that fully-dressed classical salmon flies had far too many frills: extras added by the flytyer to demonstrate his own virtuosity which had little to do with the fly’s effectiveness in the water and which the salmon itself could not appreciate anyway. Moreover fully-dressed flies lacked translucence and mobility. These points are true but they do not add up to an argument which proves that featherwings are inherently inferior to hairwings. All they show is that the type of featherwings tied in the past suffered from defects in their construction which are quite capable of. (MP)
