About the book >.>.> It is a great honour and pleasure to be invited by Professor Crosnier to write a preface to this book which is a sequel or companion volume to Fencing with the Foil and clearly gives the lie to the old saying that the sequel to a best-seller is never so good. This book deserves as much success as its predecessor; indeed it should have more for books on sabre are even rarer than books on foil. It is clear and concise ably illustrated by Mrs. Kaye Gibson’s drawings and will serve as an introduction a manual of regular instruction and a book of reference at one and the same time. But I can confidently leave a description of the book to the reviewers. Let me instead commend it to the sabreurs (of course) and also to all other fencers and let me say a little therefore in praise of the sabre. Roger Crosnier could give no satisfactory reason for inviting me to write this but after some puzzlement I think his reason must be that I had got such obvious pleasure out of the sabre over the past twenty-five years-for the sabre is there to be enjoyed just as the foil is there to be studied and the ?p?e to be used-a difference which will be realized more if the electric foil has come to stay. Roger Crosnier is of course guilty of one gross understate- ment in his foreword by referring to the sabre as ‘one which is not foreign to the British character and temperament. This will be evident to all sabreurs but I point it out in case foilists and ?p?eists should miss it. (SP)
