About the book >.>.> Not only a critical biography of a major painter this book seeks also to give an account of the social and political background which moulded and shaped L?ger’s ideas. L?ger almost alone among the great artists of the twentieth century wrote extensively. He lectured at universities he was published in journals and newspapers he spoke at trade union congresses. His articles cover a wide variety of topics: architecture the issue of liberty in art the theatre and the cinema and above all the problems and the role of contemporary painting. This study draws extensively on L?ger’s own words and examines as well the broad range of other media in which L?ger worked: film theatre d?cor ceramic sculpture and mosaic. There has been a tendency to concentrate on L?ger’s early painting to the neglect of his later work and of his work in other media. Peter de Francia who is himself a painter has redressed the balance recreating L?ger both as an artist and as a participant in the cultural artistic and social struggles of his time. (MP)
